RUPA President Benn Robinson together with Paddy Ryan, Tom Kingston, Pat McCabe and Australian Women’s Sevens duo, Charlotte Caslick and Dom Du Toit ventured away from the training field to 38 stories above Sydney’s CBD for a Charity Trading Event hosted by AFEX (Associated Foreign Exchange Inc.) on Wednesday.
As the chosen charity for the event, representatives from Hearts in Union were also in attendance and were presented with a $10,000 cheque to go towards their efforts in assisting players who have suffered severe injuries from playing rugby.
Hosted by AFEX, an organisation part of RUPA’s partnership portfolio who provide rugby players with foreign exchange and market advice, the players walked through the glass front doors of their offices to the delight of many of the staff.
Together with an interactive kicking game, business card raffle and plenty of laughs, the relaxed social event proved a hit for AFEX, Hearts in Union and the players in attendance, who had a first-hand opportunity to experience a career in finance.
Hitting the AFEX trading floor, players mingled with staff at their desks to witness a day in the life of the experienced account executives.
For current students, Pat McCabe and Tom Kingston it was a way to expand their academic vocabulary further with key insights into foreign markets and business. Meanwhile the Sevens girls, Charlotte and Dom, took to the phones to speak with clients and try to make a few sales.
Paddy Ryan, who is interested in the finance industry as a potential post-rugby career goal, and Benn Robinson, who trialled the General Manager’s 360-degree city view office, were also keen in spending a couple of hours chatting to AFEX staff and learning about their roles.
Like all of RUPA’s partners, AFEX is an organisation committed to providing support and advice to Australia’s professional rugby players. Due to the global nature of rugby, the international travel and potential overseas career moves, AFEX’s expertise and services with money exchange, global payments and transfers across international borders can be of great assistance to players.
Australian professional rugby players seeking more information on AFEX and how they can help should contact RUPA Player Relations Manager, Patrick Phibbs, or the Player Development Manager at their Super Rugby Club.
