Players from the NSW Waratahs recently attended a networking function, hosted by RUPA's Official Designated Recruitment Partner, Robert Walters, to connect with industry experts and discuss life after rugby.

The event underscored the importance of networking for professional athletes and the small steps that athletes can take during their professional rugby career to create options for life after rugby. By connecting athletes with professionals from diverse industries, the event opened doors to new possibilities and career pathways.

The event kicked off with a panel hosted by Justin Harrison (RUPA CEO and Wallaby 770), alongside Kristin Hay (Knight Frank), Andrew Hanson (Robert Walters) and Tom Millner (Contact Asset Management). The panel was designed to empower athletes with the tools and insights needed to navigate the world of networking effectively through valuable advice on personal branding, communication skills, and building professional relationships.

One of the key messages of the panel was the importance of the transferable skills that professional players possess in a high performance environment, and how this directly translates into all fields of work. In particular, the importance of players leveraging their unique background and experiences as a professional athlete. Attributes such as discipline, resilience, and teamwork, honed on the field, are highly valued in the corporate world. By recognizing and articulating these skills, athletes can effectively position themselves for success in their post-sports careers.

Andrew Hanson maintains that athletes should always include their experiences and career as a professional rugby player on their CV, as employers will see unique value.

In line with this partnership, Robert Walters commits to providing tailored support for both past and present players. This support includes specialised one-on-one or group sessions with Recruitment Specialists, focusing on enhancing CV writing skills, interview techniques, identifying transferable skills, and exploring career opportunities. The collaboration aims to equip players with a comprehensive toolbox of resources to navigate their career development beyond the field.

Hugh Sinclair (RUPA Player Director) and Anthony Herbert (DeepWell Liquidity Management)

We look forward to continuing to assist players in their career transitions and educational pursuits beyond the field.
