2024 BDO Rugby Players Lunch Wrap-Up: Celebrating the person inside the athlete

RUPA and BDO are proud to wrap up the 2024 BDO Rugby Players Lunch, celebrating the outstanding achievements of Australia’s rugby players on and off the field. From outstanding performances in matches to academic and community contributions, this year’s winners exemplify the very best of the sport’s values. Special thanks to all RUPA’s supporters who attended, and particularly to RUPA’s valued partner, BDO, for the continued support of not only the Annual Lunch but The Advantage Line Program.

The Medal for Excellence, presented by BDO, is voted on by all players and recognizes an individual who has achieved overall excellence both on and off the field, contributing to the growth of Australian Rugby.

Fraser's stellar season with the Queensland Reds and Wallabies has cemented his reputation as one of Australian rugby’s finest. A relentless force at the breakdown, Fraser was instrumental in his team’s campaign, showcasing an unmatched ability to turn defense into attack. His leadership and consistency in high-pressure moments earned him the game’s most prestigious individual honour, following 2023 winner Allan Alaalatoa.

Women’s Medal for Excellence

The Women’s Medal for Excellence, presented by Buildcorp, is awarded to a female super rugby player who exemplifies leadership, on-field performance, off-field contributions to the community, and overall excellence in Australian Rugby.

Atasi has been a beacon of excellence for the Wallaroos this year, combining her on-field brilliance with off-field leadership. Known for her physicality, game awareness, and powerful presence in key matches, Lafai has been a driving force in the game. She was also the winner of the 2024 Waratahs Player of the Year.

The Men’s Rugby Sevens Players’ Player Award, presented by Gallagher Insurance, is voted on by the entire Sevens playing squad and recognizes leadership, excellence, and overall on-field performance.

Nick's consistency, resilience, and versatility stood out among his peers in 2024. As the captain of the Australian Sevens team, Malouf continued to lead by example, delivering outstanding performances on the world stage, including the 2024 Paris Olympics. His ability to consistently performing under pressure earned him the respect of his peers and this well-deserved accolade. Nick has recently transitioned out of rugby and has commenced a full-time position at Commonwealth Bank.

The Women’s Rugby Sevens Players’ Player Award, presented by Taylors Wine, is voted on by the entire Sevens playing squad and recognizes leadership, excellence, and overall on-field performance.

Maddison's explosive speed, precision, and unmatched try-scoring ability made her a standout on the Women’s Sevens circuit this year. Levi’s ability to read the game and create scoring opportunities has been crucial to Australia’s success. Her teammates described her as a dependable and game-changing player who brought energy and focus to every tournament.

The Newcomer of the Year Award, presented by Stone and Wood, recognizes an emerging player who has made an immediate and significant impact in their first season of professional rugby. This prestigious honour highlights exceptional talent, adaptability, and the ability to thrive at the elite level of the game.

Charlie made a remarkable debut with the Wallabies in 2024, impressing fans and selectors alike with his maturity and versatility. Charlie has shown composure beyond his years, delivering consistent performances in both attack and defence. His ability to adapt to the demands of professional rugby has marked him as a rising star with a bright future.

Ed Kennedy

The RUPA Academic Excellence Award, presented by Robert Walters, celebrates players who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to their education and career outside of rugby, while excelling on the field. This prestigious honour recognizes the discipline, determination, and time management required to balance the demands of elite sport with academic and vocational pursuits.

Andy Muirhead, founder of Yara, provides training and career opportunities in civil construction for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals. Yara is also partnered with the Brumbies to support the First Nations Pathways program.

Ed Kennedy holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing) and a Graduate Diploma in Financial Planning. He was admitted to the University of Tasmania Roll of Excellence for 2024. Ed has also worked closely with RUPA’s partner, Robert Walters, in career exploration, resume support, and interview preparation, securing a position as Investment Assistant at Escala, after retiring from rugby in mid-2024.

Community Service Award

The Community Service Award, presented by Citation Legal, honours a player who has made an outstanding contribution to their communities through meaningful service, advocacy, and leadership. This award recognizes players who use their platform to make a positive and lasting impact beyond the game.

Blake, through youth mentorship programs, rugby clinics, and mental health initiatives, has demonstrated profound dedication to the rugby community. Blake coordinated and led a life skills program for young males at a local high school, covering topics such as decision-making, risk-taking, emotional resilience, and dealing with challenges. His tireless efforts off the field earned him this award, alongside the Brumbies’ 2024 Community Engagement Award.
