Hugh Summerhayes from Cranbrook School in Bellevue Hill, NSW and Ed Craig from Epping Boys High School in NSW have been announced as the recipients of the 2014 Volvo Australian Schools Rugby Scholarships.

As Australian Schoolboys representatives in the last 12 months, Hugh and Ed were selected having both met the key criteria for the scholarships, including exemplary behaviour and leadership at school, positive work habits and application to study and involvement in a variety of school or community activities.

It has topped off a great year for Hugh Summerhayes, following a year which saw him selected as School Prefect, House Captain and Vice-Captain of the first XV rugby team that won the Combined Associate Schools (CAS) competition in 2014.

Hugh has demonstrated an exemplary attitude to learning throughout his senior year, recognised on the Headmaster’s List for Academic Effort on four occasions. He also placed first in English Extension and second in Legal Studies.

As House Captain, Hugh helped raise over $2000 to go towards the construction of a school for children in Ledahk, Nepal. He has also collected for the Red Shield Appeal for a number of years and was part of the Cranbrook Ethical Society to discuss and understand the ethical dilemmas of the modern world.

Having completed his Year 12 studies this year, Hugh hopes to study Commerce Law in 2015.

Ed Craig’s leadership credentials extend back to Year 7 when he was a member of the school SRC. Since then he has been SRC Vice Captain in 2013 and a School Prefect and Captain of his School’s First XV rugby side this year.

Ed has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to his education with many commenting on his dedication to learning, a deed that will set him in good stead for his intention to study teaching in 2015.

With a passion for music, Ed has been involved in various musical ensemble groups, performing locally to raise money for charities. Ed also organised the ‘Camping for Cancer’ event at his school and has been recognised by Rotary Australia for “Service above Self”.

The scholarships can be used to go towards rugby and/or education expenses.
